Proper Airflow Maximizes AC and Heating Efficiency with High Quality Air Filters and Proper Airflow

Airflow is one of the most important aspects affecting the performance of your AC system. Proper Airflow maximizes AC and Heating Efficiency! An example would be if your airflow is half of the design airflow, your system will have roughly half the capacity but still use the same amount of energy. In addition to this, the low airflow can cause your system to return liquid refrigerant to the compressor which is only designed to compress gas. This liquid refrigerant acts like a degreaser and has a tendency to wash the lubricant out of the compressor causing premature compressor failures.

Air quality is not necessarily the primary issue because as your filter gets loaded up with dust it becomes a better filter but also reduces airflow. Our recommendation is to have a high quality pleated filter at the unit similar to a Lennox Healthy climate or a Pureair filter at the unit(other brands are available). This not only keeps your AC coil cleaner, which reduces coil maintenance frequency. These filters also reduce dust both on the coil and in the home and they usually only need to be changed once or twice per year depending on your application.

In summary, use a high quality filter in addition to coil UV light and Reme Halo on the discharge of your air handler for the furnace to optimize the energy performance, reduce maintenance and maximize the quality of your indoor air. Proper Airflow maximizes AC and Heating Efficiency! If you can only afford one of these, start with the 5" pleated filter at the air handler of the furnace
